Dr Maske, MBChB (SA) MD FCS (Ophth) (SA)

Dr Richard Maske was born and educated in South Africa, where
he graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1970 with a
Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB) degree (cum laude).
After completing his intern year, he worked as a Medical
Practitioner in Windhoek, Namibia for four years before returning
to Cape Town to carry out research.

He received his degree as a Doctor
of Medicine (MD) in 1979 and was awarded a Post-doctoral Fellowship
to undertake visual research at the Australian National University
in Canberra, for the next two years.
He returned to South Africa to
specialise in ophthalmology at the University of Cape Town and
Groote Schuur Hospital, and received his Fellowship of the Colleges
of Medicine in Ophthalmology (FCS (SA) OPHTHALMOL) in 1986.
He then worked as a full-time
specialist and consultant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town
and developed a special interest in corneal diseases.
In 1990, he went into private
practice in Cape Town, but continued to consult on a part-time
basis at Groote Schuur Hospital until 2001.
Since then, he has run his own
private practice on a full-time basis. He performs refractive
surgery as well as other anterior segment surgery including
cataract and glaucoma surgery and performed
excimer laser surgery in 1994.
The author of more than 30 articles
published in international peerreviewed journals, Dr Maske has also
presented more than 20 papers at congresses and meetings.
A member of the Ophthalmological
Society of South Africa and the Southern African Society of
Cataract and Refractive Society, he regularly attends their annual
congresses and is also an examiner for the Colleges of Medicine of
South Africa for Ophthalmology.
Dr Maske joined Optimax in 2007.
