Lasers treat the need for distance vision only. If you wear glasses for both distance and close vision, the distant vision can be treated but you will still need glasses for close vision. The continuing need for reading glasses is not due to long or short sight, but the stiffening of the eye muscles that usually occurs after middle age. As with all normal-sighted people, patients will still need reading glasses from about 45 years of age unless monovision or Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is chosen.

LASIK Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK is a combined surgical and laser procedure. A thin flap is cut on the surface of the eye (cornea) and the exposed tissue is lasered before replacing the flap. This procedure was established in 1994 and is suitable for mild to severe short sight, mild long sight and astigmatism.

LASEK Laser Eye Surgery

LASEK is a combination of PRK (est 1988) and Epiflap (est 1997). The surface of the eye is lasered (cornea) without the need of surgery to the eye. This procedure is suitable for mild to moderate short sight and astigmatism.

LASIK Wavefront Laser Eye Surgery

Wavefront offers customised analysis and treatment. A unique map is obtained of each eye and together with other tests we tailor the treatment accordingly. Wavefront analysis is performed as part of your consultation.

LASIK IntraLase Laser Eye Surgery

The IntraLase laser is the safest way to create the LASIK flap. Wavefront and IntraLase treatment can be combined which creates the Gold Standard for Laser Eye Surgery: 'All Laser' LASIK or IntraLASIK.

Bilateral Treatment

Most people choose bilateral treatment (both eyes treated together) for reasons of convenience. Some consider it safer to wait until the outcome of the first eye is known before treating the second.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) and Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL)

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) may be a preferable option for those who are over the age of 45. The lens inside the eye is exchanged with an artificial lens of the correct power for good vision. This is the same operation as cataract surgery but performed for the purpose of correcting your sight (refractive error) and not for removing a cataract.

Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL) treatment was established in 1997. The treatment involves placing a small lens just under the surface, inside the eye, correcting your distance vision. This procedure is recommended for patients who do not need reading glasses now or in the near future and are generally under the age of 40. It is possible to remove these lenses at any time and reverse their effect.With the ICL procedure, we are able to treat patients with prescriptions up to -23d or +12d with +/- 7d of astigmatism. The treatment is also available for patients who are unsuitable for laser treatment due to corneal thickness.
