Keeping it in the family

Earlier this year, we treated three sisters at Optimax Glasgow. Older sister Stephanie, and twins Louise and Pamela, all opted for LASEK treatment in a bid to ditch their glasses for good. Stephanie visited another laser eye surgery provider beforehand and shopped around a bit, before settling on Optimax.

“I actually went to another organisation and I thought I would do a bit of research and try Optimax. When I came here, it was just really friendly, more family orientated, and I really connected with the people that did the consultation on the day” – Stephanie

She told younger sisters Louise and Pamela about her upcoming consultation and, as glasses wearers with high prescriptions themselves, they decided to pop along and see what it was all about.

“When we came for the consultation with Stephanie, just walking through the doors, the staff were really helpful, really friendly, just really welcoming, and that made our decision a lot easier to choose Optimax” – Louise

Stephanie and Louise are both dance teachers at their own studio and, with such an active day job, getting rid of glasses seemed like the obvious option.

“My eyes relied on glasses 24/7. I had to wear them all the time so when I has them on and was trying to teach the kids, I had to be so energetic and do the dancing moves, and sometimes they would fall off” – Louise

Selecting your treatment

We offer two types of laser eye surgery at Optimax – LASIK and LASEK – and you can read about the differences between the two procedures here. Depending on a number of factors, such as corneal thickness and your involvement in high impact sports, our optometrists will recommend the most suitable treatment for you. As it happens, Stephanie, Louise and Pamela were all found to be most suitable for LASEK. This involves softening and gently removing the eye’s top corneal layer, before the laser is applied to the middle corneal layer.

What did the sisters have to say about the procedure itself?

“On the day, I was actually really nervous. I didn’t think I was going to be but the staff were great. They made me feel at ease, they held my hand when I was in surgery, and it was actually over really quickly which was amazing” – Stephanie

“It’s quick - the procedure itself is only 10 or 15 minutes. I would definitely recommend laser eye surgery at Optimax. The staff were amazing!” – Louise

“The surgery was quick and the results were fantastic. There’s nothing to be scared of – I would really recommend Optimax” – Pamela

What about life post-treatment?

A lot of our patients talk about the ways in which their life has changed for the better following treatment. Just small things, like reading the back of the shampoo bottle in the shower, can make a world of difference. So, what did Louise and Stephanie notice the most in life without glasses?

“I got up in the night to get a drink of water and go to the toilet, I could actually see which was amazing. Honestly, it was spectacular!” – Louise

“The first thing that I noticed is when I returned to my yoga studio, I could actually see my face in the mirror. For the past year and a half, my face was a blur, but that was amazing. I could actually notice everyone in the classroom around me. And as a dance teacher, I can now see my students; it’s amazing!”  – Stephanie

You can watch the Hawthorn Sisters’ testimonials on our YouTube channel to hear more about how they got on.

“I would really advise going to Optimax. Don’t be scared, get it done, it’s over super quick, and you won’t regret it” – Stephanie
