Dr Mughal interview

Dr Sajjad Mughal | MBChB MSc MRCOphth DRCOphth CertLRS FRCS

We know how important it is to meet your surgeon before treatment. Your eyesight is so important and you want to feel comfortable and be absolutely sure that you’re in good hands. So, we sat down with one of our laser surgeons, Dr Mughal, and asked him a few questions to help prospective patients get to know him better.

In terms of a quick overview, you should know that Dr Mughal has been with Optimax since 2007 and has performed over 23,000 procedures in that time. He initially studied medicine and qualified as a doctor in 1992, before moving into the world of ophthalmology in 1994. He then developed a specialism in corneal refractive laser surgery and became certified by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

Our interview with Dr Mughal

Why did you decide to specialise in laser eye surgery?

I chose to specialise in laser eye surgery as it’s challenging but very rewarding. Every doctor wants to be challenged in their careers and the continuous advancements of laser technology over the years make it a very exciting industry. I love that I’m helping patients achieve a big convenience factor.

Have you ever treated your friends or family?

I’ve treated a number of friends over the years and also treated a family member 8 years ago. She’s still got perfect vision now! I haven’t had treatment myself as I’ve always had very good vision.

What’s your greatest achievement in your career?

My proudest professional moment was crossing the 20,000 treatments mark. It took 10 years but I’m proud to have provided excellent patient journeys from start to finish. I’ve now completed 23,000 laser treatments.

What’s your number one priority in treatment?

My number one priority is patient safety and preserving their eye health. It’s also important to give all of my patients realistic expectations and make sure that treatment is right for them and their lifestyle.

What’s your favourite part of the job and why?

My favourite part of the job is carrying out the procedures and achieving good results for visual outcomes. I also love meeting all kinds of patients. I’ve treated patients in lots of professions, from deep sea divers and world travellers, to busy mums and professional sportspeople. People from every walk of life can benefit from getting rid of their glasses and achieving clear vision, and I enjoy helping them achieve that.
