Alternatives to Laser Eye Surgery

Not everyone is suitable for laser eye surgery, however there are other treatment options available. These treatments can be ideal for the over 50's where there is the need for reading glasses.

Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL)

ICL are used for the correction of severe short sight, long sight and astigmatism. They are similar to small contact lenses but placed inside the eye.  Recovery is usually within two weeks.

The internal lens of the eye is replaced with a tiny collagen lens of the correct strength.  A multi-focus lens can be used which could enable both distance and reading glasses. Learn more about ICL

Cataract Eye Surgery / Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Cataract surgery aims to restore clear sight and in the majority of cases, will eliminate the need for both distance and reading glasses.  Recovery is usually within a few days. Optimax uses multifocal lenses which are not available on the NHS. The option of being able to correct the need for reading glasses as well as distance vision is a great advantage and the reason many people choose to go private. Learn more about Cataract Surgery.

Bilateral Treatment

Most people choose bilateral treatment (both eyes treated together) for reasons of convenience. Some consider it safer to wait until the outcome of the first eye is known before treating the second.
*Bilateral treatment can be performed on Laser Eye Surgery patients only.
