Sara's LASEK story

Freedom from contact lenses

Back in April this year, we treated our patient Sara with LASEK surgery in both eyes. Sara had been struggling with glasses and contact lenses for a number of years but finally took the plunge and visited us after her friend had treatment with Optimax and loved her results! Sara’s career is as a project manager, as well as working as an influencer on YouTube and Instagram. Both of these roles require a lot of screen time and use of digital devices which are known to strain the eyes. We had a chat with Sara six months on from her surgery to find out how life is now without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

What made you want to get laser eye surgery?

I struggled with poor vision for many years growing up. I would constantly squint when watching the telly and I would need to wear contact lenses when applying my makeup, which meant I ended up wearing them most days. They always irritated and dried my eyes out by the afternoon and, if I didn’t have eye drops with me, I would resort to removing the lenses and having to struggle for the rest of the day.

How strong was your prescription prior to surgery?

I was -2.50 in each eye. (This is a moderate short-sighted prescription)

What was the Optimax experience like in the Finchley Road clinic?

It was absolutely amazing, from the lovely girls at the front desk to the optometrist to the doctor. It’s always important to be made to feel comfortable in these circumstances and I felt the staff went above and beyond. Considering the amount of people they see each day, I felt I had a truly personal experience.

How was your recovery process?

The first few hours I had some pain. I slept it off that evening and when I woke the next day I felt pretty good. The eye drops helped and with every hour I felt better and better.

How has life changed after treatment?

I never realised how much of an irritant lenses were until I didn’t need to wear them anymore. I was so used to putting them in and taking them out; it annoys you but you don’t think there’s anything to be done. I also couldn’t believe that people just got to walk around with perfect vision, and I couldn’t believe just how much I was missing out on! Small things like waking up, rubbing my eyes and just having normal sight is an amazing feeling.

What made you choose Optimax?

I felt great comfort in the fact that they do this procedure day in day out – it’s second nature to them. Also, after speaking to the doctor (Dr Ayoubi), I just knew I was in the best hands. I can’t recommend them enough.

Sara also filmed a YouTube video about her experience which you can watch here. We’re absolutely delighted that Sara is so happy with the results of her treatment and her video provides some excellent insight into the patient journey at Optimax.
