Choosing your laser machine

 

We know that choosing where to have your laser eye surgery is an important decision and can feel quite daunting. That’s not to mention making sure you know which type of treatment to opt for – be that LASIK, LASEK, PRK or SMILE – or choosing your specific surgeon. Something that can also impact your results is the type of laser that is used to treat you. At Optimax, we own our laser machines (as opposed to renting them), and employ a team of dedicated and specially trained laser engineers. A program of regular preventative maintenance - combined with remote monitoring - ensures that our lasers are always optimally primed to deliver the best possible results. Just like your mobile phone, our lasers are also routinely updated with the most current manufacturer software and technology.

 

Schwind Amaris 750s: 6D tracking

 

One of the lasers we use across our clinics is the Schwind Amaris 750s, a laser machine manufactured by German eye laser specialists Schwind. Founded in 1958, Schwind grew from a diagnostics supplier to an eye technology solutions expert, with their products now used in over 100 countries around the world. We chose to have the Schwind Amaris 750s in our clinics for a number of reasons, one being its incredible eye tracking abilities. The machine follows six different eye movement dimensions including:

  1. X-axis (linear movement)
  2. Y-axis (linear movement)
  3. Horizontal rolling
  4. Vertical rolling
  5. Rotation around the visual axis
  6. Z-axis (head and eye movements up and down)

 

The laser covers six areas of movement, allowing it to be much more precise than previous lasers. The laser eye surgery industry is particularly exciting as new advancements are improving the process all the time. An example of this is the Schwind Amaris 750s locking onto individual points of your eye and ensuring that the laser only treats those spots on the cornea. In fact, the tracker monitors the position of the eye 1050 times a second. The machine captures all movement during the procedure and responds to deviation within three milliseconds. If the eye moves too much during treatment, the laser shuts off, ensuring extremely high precision.

 

With a pulse frequency of 750 Hertz, each dioptre of your prescription can be treated by the Amaris in 1.5 seconds (figures based on LASIK treatment for patients with no astigmatism), increasing patient safety and comfort. This also keeps your cornea more hydrated and therefore reduces the chances of experiencing dry eyes post-treatment. The new technology also provides a quicker, smoother healing process after surgery.

 

Wavefront technology

 

The Schwind Amaris 750s follows an individual map of your cornea created from your eye scans at your Optimax consultation. This ensures that the laser accounts for every mark and aberration on your cornea, giving you a personalised treatment. This is called Wavefront technology and is provided as a standard with all Optimax laser treatments. It also helps to create a natural, smoother corneal shape following treatment, as well as improving your final results following treatment. The technique is also referred to as “custom laser eye surgery” as each patient receives a personalised treatment based on their scans.
